Terrain Synthesis from DEM (Digital Elevation Model)

The list of World Machine devices (plug-ins) displayed on this page are described in details in our 2007 paper "Terrain Synthesis from Digital Elevation Models". Here is a list of planned plug-ins and their respective targeted release dates.
  1. Device: PPA ridge/valley picker (2007-07-15 completed)
  2. Device: Graphcut seam finder (2007-08-15 completed)
  3. Device: Poisson seam remover (2007-08-15 completed)
  4. Macro (tentative): Terrain Synthesis from DEM (TBA)

As of 2007-07-05, all the plug-ins are written specifically for World Machine Pro Beta 5. While I try to test the devices carefully before releasing them, they are still incomplete and most likely buggy. moreover, I am still actively pursuing possible future development, especially in the area of capturing terrain style from existing DEMs.

(.zip 1.5MB) external DLLs required (Intel IPP 5.2), just drop it into the folder where the WM.exe resides or any system path.

Contents of the zip file:

  • PPA.dll
    (192KB): WM Pro Beta 5 plug-in device. save it into <WM folder/plugins/devices>
  • PPA.release.tmd
    (19KB): WM project file that shows an example including the use of PPA.
  • mj.png
    (852KB): 16-bit PNG terrain (Mount Jackson, CO) to be used with the example project file.

Notes: The text output ports are currently not functional.

  • merger.release.tmd
    WM project file that shows an example including the use of both the seam finder and seam remover devices.
  • input1.png & input2.png
    16-bit PNG terrain files (parts of the Grand Canyon) to be used with the example project file.
  • mask1.png, mask2.png, mask3.png
    8-bit PNG mask files to be used with the example project file. play with different masks as you like
  • teaser.jpg
    teaser image for the device.
